
KOZHIKODE: Concerns over drug abuse during festive nights in Kozhikode. Drugs worth crores flowed into the district for New Year celebrations. Most of the 64 people arrested for smuggling chemical drugs were college students. These many people were caught just through the special inspections conducted by the Excise from December 5th to January 5th to prevent drug smuggling. 69 cases were registered. The number of arrests and registered cases this year has doubled compared to last year. 28 people were arrested in 29 cases last year. In 2023, 34 people were arrested in 31 cases. 514 cases were registered related to drugs, excise and tobacco products. 111 people were arrested in excise cases and 67 in narcotic drug cases. Out of the 568 cases registered last year, 136 were excise cases, 29 were in narcotic drug cases and 403 were related to tobacco smuggling.
Synthetic - Chemical drugs available everywhere
While cannabis and bidi were widely used in the past, the use and sale of synthetic and chemical intoxicants are now increasing. This time, 11.695 grams of MDA was seized by the excise . 3.493 grams of methamphetamine were also recovered. 425 grams of cannabis chocolates were also seized.
