Death of newborn at Nedumangad Hospital: Human Rights Commission orders investigation

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Human Rights Commission intervention in the incident of a baby dying during a C-section at the Nedumangad District Hospital. Commission Chairman Justice Alexander Thomas has ordered an investigation into the incident. Alexander Thomas directed the District Medical Officer to conduct an investigation and submit a report within a month. The action was taken on a complaint filed by public activist Saithali Kaippadi demanding a case be filed against the doctor responsible.

Palode native Niranjana, who was pregnant and had come for a check-up last Tuesday, was advised to be admitted. She was taken to the labour room at 4 am. A cesarean section was performed at 2 pm and the baby was taken out. The baby later died. The doctors explained that the cause of death was respiratory failure.

The government had announced an investigation into the incident amid widespread protests. The accused doctor Bindu Sundar was initially transferred and then placed on compulsory leave/suspended.
