KOZHIKODE: The court will decide on Shimjitha’s bail application today. It is expected that the Kunnamangalam Magistrate's Court will decide on the bail petition filed by the woman, who is now on remand over the suicide of Govindapuram native Deepak. Police have charged abetment to suicide against Shimjitha Mustafa (35), a native of Vadakara. Earlier this month, Shinjitha filmed a video from a bus and uploaded it on social media, alleging that she was sexually assaulted by a person in the video, who was later identified as Deepak.
Deepak, who was seriously disturbed over the video going viral, pleaded innocence with his friends and soon committed suicide out of humiliation.
The police have informed the court that the accused will influence witnesses if granted bail. The police have also informed the court that the investigation into the case is in the initial stage. However, no custody application has been filed for Shimjita. The phone on which the video was posted has been sent for scientific examination by the police.
The police have registered a case against the woman on the complaint of the mother of Govindapuram native Deepak. The arrest came after a lookout notice was issued for Shimjitha. The police issued the lookout notice after receiving information that Shimjitha would attempt to flee the country.
The woman has been charged with a crime that can carry a jail term of up to ten years and a fine. The police had found that the video shared by Shimjitha had been edited and shortened. The police have also collected the CCTV footage of the bus.
