KOCHI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has initiated an investigation in the Bhutan vehicle smuggling case. The ED investigation is a continuation of the investigation conducted by the customs preventive division at 17 locations in the state. The investigation team issued notices to many including actor Amith Chakkalakal found to have imported cars using fake documents. Actor Dulquer Salmaan will also be issued a notice and summoned.

The investigation is focused on the middlemen, traders and vehicle buyers who brought the vehicle to India by concocting fake documents. The ED is investigating the black money transaction in the Bhutan car smuggling.

The biggest vehicle smuggling case related to Bhutan that has come to light recently was uncovered during the inspection conducted by the Customs in 'Operation Numkhor'. Vehicles smuggled from Bhutan, including those of film stars, were found to be used in Kerala.

Around forty vehicles have been seized from various parts of the state so far. Customs estimates that around 200 vehicles may have been brought to Kerala. Customs has sought the help of others including the Motor Vehicles Department to trace the rest.
