Extremely heavy rains predicted in three districts, red alert issued

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Three districts are on red alert in the state today in the wake of the possibility of extremely heavy rains. A red alert has been sounded for Ernakulam, Idukki and Thrissur. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicates extremely heavy rainfall of more than 204.4 mm in 24 hours.


An orange alert has also been issued for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Palakkad and Malappuram. The possibility of extremely heavy rains is predicted in isolated places. The IMD defines extremely heavy rains of more than 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours.


A yellow alert has also been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. The possibility of heavy rains is predicted. Heavy rainfall is defined as rainfall of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in 24 hours.


The IMD has said that there is a possibility of moderate rainfall and strong winds with a speed of up to 40 kmph at isolated places in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam and Thrissur in the next three hours. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has said that there is a possibility of sea erosion due to waves of 1.6 to 1.8 meters high along the Kanyakumari coast till 05.30 pm today.
