Fire in Kozhikode new bus stand, fire force to inspect spot today

KOZHIKODE: The fire brigade will inspect the cause of the massive fire that broke out in the commercial complex at the new bus stand today. The inspection will be led by the district fire officer. The report will be submitted to the district collector today itself after an inspection. The chief secretary had directed the district collector to submit a detailed report on the fire within two days. Meantime, Mayor Beena Philip informed that a special steering committee will be convened to discuss the issue.


The fire that broke out in the textiles at the new bus stand complex had kept Kozhikode city on edge for more than five hours yesterday. The fire was brought under control after special fire units from Karipur Airport arrived. People were evacuated from the stand. Buses were diverted. The city was paralyzed. Loss worth crores were estimated. Since it was a holiday, there were no casualties. The fire broke out at 5 pm yesterday.


The fire broke out at Calicut Textiles, owned by Mukundan of Kottuly on the first floor of the bus stand complex. The cause is unclear. The fire that started in the godown spread within minutes. The textiles were completely burnt down. The entire city was engulfed in black smoke and heat.


Eight fire force units in the district, including special fire units from Malappuram district and Kozhikode Airport, doused the fire by 10 pm. The fire spread to other shops as well. Since it the school opening season, there was a large stock of textiles.
