THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Bharatiya Janata Party in Kerala now wants the official name of the state to be changed from 'Kerala' to 'Keralam'. BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard.
The letter also indicates that the Kerala Assembly passed a resolution in June 2024 to rechristen the state from 'Kerala' to 'Keralam' in official documents. Rajeev Chandrasekhar also informed that Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had written a letter expressing BJP's support for the resolution passed by the state assembly.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, in his letter to the Prime Minister, also expressed the hope that all political parties will work together to revive and preserve the rich heritage of Keralam.
The letter also states the need to create a developed and safe Kerala where the beliefs and customs of all religious groups are protected and respected. The BJP state chief said that this will also help in stopping the attempts of extremist forces to divide the state and demand separate districts based on religion. Rajeev Chandrasekhar also requested the Prime Minister's intervention to ensure that the name Keralam with a Malayalam identity be given.
