KOZHIKODE: Construction works on the state government's dream tunnel road project will begin soon. Heavy machines required for drilling through massive rocks have already arrived in the state as part of the project. The government aims to complete the Anakkampoyil–Kalladi–Meppadi tunnel road project at a fast pace, as it is expected to ease travel difficulties in Wayanad.

Two drilling rigs have already been brought to the project site. At present, work is underway to break and level the rocks at the tunnel entrance. Rock drilling using machines can begin only after the tunnel face is properly levelled. Currently, work is being carried out for 12 hours a day. Once tunnel construction begins, work will continue around the clock in multiple shifts.

Facilities such as a crusher unit for breaking rocks and shelters for workers will be set up soon. Construction of the labour camp, office cabins, workshop, and crusher unit will be completed shortly.

Construction of a temporary four-lane arch steel bridge across the Marippuzha River has also begun. The project received administrative approval from the state government in 2020, while environmental clearance from the Union Ministry of Environment was granted in 2025. The project is being implemented by the Public Works Department with financial support from KIIFB. The Konkan Railway Corporation is the executing agency.
