Heavy rain and strong winds expected tonight in these districts; avoid non-essential travel

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that various districts across Kerala will receive rainfall tonight. Moderate rainfall and strong winds reaching speeds up to 40 km/h are likely in the districts of Kannur and Kasaragod over the next three hours.

Possible impacts

• Waterlogging on major roads and reduced visibility may lead to traffic congestion.
• Waterlogging and flooding are likely in low-lying areas and along riverbanks.
• Falling trees could result in power outages and hazardous situations.

The National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has warned of sea incursion along the Kanyakumari coast from 5:30 AM to 11:30 PM on May 21, 2025, due to the Kallakkadal (swell surge) phenomenon. Wave heights may rise between 0.8 to 1.1 meters, posing a threat of coastal flooding. Fisherfolk and coastal residents are advised to remain cautious.

Precautionary measures:

• Those in vulnerable coastal areas should relocate based on authorities' instructions due to the likelihood of intensified sea turbulence.
• Avoid venturing into the sea with small boats or fishing vessels during this period.
• During high wave activity and Kallakkadal events, both launching and docking of fishing vessels are dangerous and should be avoided.
• All beach-related tourism activities must be completely suspended until the warning is withdrawn.
• Secure all fishing vessels safely within harbours. Maintain adequate spacing between boats to prevent collisions. Ensure the safety of all fishing gear.
• Refrain entirely from visiting beaches or engaging in sea-based recreational activities.
• Extra caution is urged due to the risk of sea erosion.
