Heavy rain likely today; two districts on red alert, alert issued

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has informed that there is a possibility of extremely heavy rain in the state today. Red alert has been issued in Kannur and Kasaragod. The possibility of extremely heavy rain has been predicted. The IMD indicates that more than 204.4 mm of rain will fall in 24 hours.
An orange alert has been issued in Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad. The possibility of very heavy rain has been predicted in isolated places. Very heavy rain is likely to lash in 24 hours.

The IMD has declared a yellow alert in the following districts. The possibility of isolated heavy rain is predicted. Heavy rain is defined as a situation where 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rain is received in 24 hours.

Extremely heavy rain will create accidents. A tendency of heavy rain is expected in a short time. It may cause mountain and flash floods. There is also a possibility of waterlogging in urban areas and low-lying areas in general. The situation of continued rain may cause mudslides and landslides. The public and government agencies should be extremely vigilant.

A holiday has been declared for educational institutions in various districts today due to heavy rain. Holidays have been declared in Kasaragod, Thrissur and Kannur. The IMD has issued a red alert in Kasaragod on August 6, so keeping in mind the safety of the people, the district collector has declared a holiday for all educational institutions in the district.

The holiday is applicable to schools, colleges, professional colleges, Kendriya Vidyalayas, tuition centers, madrasas, anganwadis and special classes in the district. All previously announced exams (including professional, university and other departmental exams) will be held as scheduled. There is no change in the exam timings.
