KOCHI: Kerala High Court granted bail to Sukant Suresh, accused in the death of an IB officer in Thiruvananthapuram Pettah. With the main stages of the investigation over, the high court deemed it not necessary to extend the custody period of Sukant. Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas imposed a bail on condition that Sukant doesn’t leave the country without the permission of the trial court.
On March 24, a Pathanamthitta native IB officer committed suicide by jumping in front of a train in Pettah, Thiruvananthapuram. A sudden crack in her relationship with Sukant was assumed as the reason for the drastic decision. Meanwhile, the victim’s family also alleged mental torture from Sukant and demanded a thorough investigation to bring out the real reason behind the death. As soon as the investigation began, Sukant and his family went into hiding. Meanwhile, the victim’s father submitted proof from the hospital showing that his daughter was sexually assaulted on the promise of marriage by Sukant. The police then filed a case against Sukant for rape. After the court rejected the anticipatory bail, Sukant surrendered.
Sukant argued that there is no need to keep him in custody anymore, as all the major stages of the investigation have been completed. The prosecution asserted that Sukant should be kept in custody until the forensic report of the mobile phone and the chat comes out. However, the court decided to grant bail.
