Kerala recall memories of Oommen Chandy on his first death anniversary

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala recalled their close association with the former chief minister Oommen Chandy on his first death anniversary. Commemoration meetings are being held at his hometown Puthupally and in every nook and corner of the state. People are conducting and participating in the commemorative meetings without looking at the flag’s colour.

Governor Arif Mohammed Khan inaugurated the commemoration meet held at the St George Orthodox Church in Puthupally. Prof K V Thomas, Dr Shashi Tharoor MP, Santhigiri Ashramam general secretary Swamy Gururatnam Jnana Thapasi, Panakkad Sayyed Sadiqali Shihab Thangal, Syro Malabar Sabha major Archbishop Raphel Thattil, Catholicos Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, the supreme head of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and Chandy Oommen MLA attended the function.

Governor Arif Mohammed Khan inaugurated the Oommen Chandy Foundation chaired by Chandy Oommen MLA. The Governor inaugurated the distribution of educational scholarship given to 1000 students of Puthupally and the inauguration of Oommen Chandy Sports Arean-Goal Football Turf built of Kooroppada in 50 cents.


AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal will inaugurate the commemoration meeting organized by the KPCC at 3 pm at Mamman Mappila Hall in Kottayam. KPCC chief K Sudhakaran will preside over the function. Opposition leader V D Satheesan and Ramesh Chennithala will attend the function.


Former opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala paid floral tributes to Chandy at the memorial meeting held at the KPCC headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram. Many leaders including V S Sivakumar and Sarath Chandraprasad attended.

The Thiruvananthapuram District Congress Committee organized various programmes for a week on the occasion of the first death anniversary of Oommen Chandy. In 1546 wards of the district, the Oommen Chandy Snehasparsham Jeevakarunya Scheme will be implemented. 10 houses with serious diseases in each ward are identified through home visits and adequate help is provided within a week.

Former speaker Therambil Ramakrishnan inaugurated the commemoration meet organized at the Town Hall by Thrissur DCC. Leaders including president C P Mathew offered floral tributes to Chandy's picture at the meet held at Thodupuzha Rajiv Bhawan under the leadership of Idukki DCC.
