KOCHI: A showroom employee tragically died after a brand new Range Rover Vogue car ran over him while unloading from a trailer on Sunday. A driver's union member who came to unload the car escaped with injuries.
Roshan Antony Xavier (36), a native of Pandikudy in Mattancherry, died in the tragic accident. Aneesh, a member of the CITU union from Chalikavattom, sustained head injuries. He is undergoing treatment at the Ernakulam Medical Centre Hospital in Palarivattom.
The Palarivattom police registered a case against Anshad, a native of Ernakulam, who was at the driving seat while unloading the car from the trailer. Anshad has been charged with culpable homicide and reckless driving. He is also a union member.
The accident took place at 11.30 pm on Sunday at the godown of the Jaguar-Range Rover car distribution company in Kundannur, Chalikavattom, Palarivattom. The car is worth between Rs 3 crore and Rs 6.5 crore. It is believed that the driver's lack of understanding of the controls of the automatic vehicle may have led to the accident. Roshan Antony, Aneesh and Anshad came to the site to unload the car from the trailer.
Roshan and Aneesh were giving directions to Anshad, to help bring the car down from the trailer safely. While they were putting the trailer in reverse gear, the car rolled over quickly. Roshan, who was standing on the ramp, had no time to move away. After running over Roshan's body, the car hit Aneesh and then crashed into a lorry and an electric post parked nearby. The post toppled in the impact. The injured were immediately taken to the hospital, but Roshan died midway.
The funeral rites took place at the Nazareth Holy Family Church Cemetery after a postmortem at Kalamassery Medical College Hospital. Roshan is the son of NX Joseph and the late Annie Joseph. Roshan Antony Xavier leaves behind his wife, Shelma Roshan, and children, Ancia Roshan, Evelyn Roshan.
