KOCHI: Yesterday morning Kochi Watermetro boat started its maiden voyage from the High Court terminal accompanied by the celebration of differently-abled children from the Center for Empowerment and Enrichment. The service started after Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed the inauguration in Thiruvananthapuram. Regular service for High Court - Vypin service will start today and the Vaytila - Kakkanad service will start tomorrow.
Led by center Chairman Dr. PA Mary Anitha, the children made the journey colorful by humming and singing 'kuttanadan punjayile kochu penne kuyilale'.
Kochi Water Metro is one of the largest integrated water transport projects in the world. Eight double-hull A/C electric boats and four jetties have been equipped in the first phase. The project, which will connect 10 islands, was supposed to be completed by December 2019. Vyttila, Kakkanad, High Court, Vypin and Bolgatti terminals are now ready while South Chittoor, Eloor, Cheranalloor, and Elamkunnapuzha terminals are in the final stages. Kochi Water Metro Ltd is a subsidiary of Kochi Metrorail Corporation. At full scale, the project will have 23 large boats and 55 small boats.

Features of the boat
•Hybrid model running on battery and diesel generator
• Diesel engine will automatically start when power runs out • Must be charged every hour. Charging takes 10-15 minutes
• No sound
• The boat does not overturn even if the passengers move to one side. Very little shake when traveling
• Jetty is a floating platform at the terminal.
• Not affected by tides and ebbs.

The fare is ₹20 on High Court - Vypin and Vyttila- Kakkanad route. The minimum charge is ₹20 and the maximum charge is ₹40. It takes 16 minutes to reach Vipin and 26 minutes to Kakkanad.
