THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the southwest monsoon is likely to be weak this year. As a result, southern states may receive less rainfall, according to initial assessments. The weather agency also noted that the El Nino phenomenon could affect the monsoon.

Meanwhile, temperatures continue to rise in the state despite some parts receiving light summer showers. The IMD has forecast that from today until the 14th, maximum temperatures may reach up to 38°C in Kollam, Palakkad, Kozhikode, and Kasaragod districts. Temperatures may rise up to 37°C in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Kannur, and up to 36°C in Pathanamthitta. This is about 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal levels.

A yellow alert has been issued in Kollam, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Kasargod, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kannur and Pathanamthitta districts. Due to high temperatures and humidity, hot and uncomfortable weather conditions are likely in these areas, especially outside hilly regions.
