THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There is no change in the Muharram holiday. The Muharram holiday will be on Sunday, July 6, as per the previously prepared calendar. A section had earlier demanded that Monday, when Muharram 10 is observed, be declared a public holiday in Kerala. However, there will be no holiday on Monday. Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar, marks the beginning of the Islamic new year.
SYS has come forward demanding that the Muharram holiday be changed. According to the government calendar, the first day of Muharram 1447 AH is June 27, 2025. However, believers calculate the month based on the moonrise. Therefore, when the month was determined, the first day came on June 28.
Muharram 10, which is given importance by believers, falls on Monday, July 7, 2025. Therefore, the SYS Malappuram District Committee demanded that steps be taken to declare the said day as a public holiday. Since the government has generally taken a liberal approach to such issues in the past, it is expected that the same will be true of this issue.
