THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There has long been a complaint that Kerala lags behind other states in terms of connectivity to airports. However, with the latest plan by the National Highways Authority, travel access to two airports in the state is set to improve. Of the five new roads proposed to be built in Kerala, two will lead directly to airports.
The new roads will connect to Kannur and Karipur airports. Based on the request from the state government, the initial steps have begun for the construction of five new highways. The National Highways Authority has officially informed the state government about this. The roads from Ramanattukara to Karipur Airport and from Kannur city to Mattannur Airport will be developed.
The project plan is being prepared considering the request made by the state government. During a meeting led by the Chief Minister with the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Kerala had requested that more roads be upgraded to national highway standards. A detailed proposal was also submitted at that time. Based on this, the preparation of the project report has now begun.
The 12-kilometre Ramanattukara–Calicut Airport road and the 20-kilometre Kodungallur–Angamaly (Western Ernakulam Bypass) road will be upgraded to four-lane highways. The 30-kilometre Kannur Airport road and the 13-kilometre Vypin Matsyafed road will also be improved. Additionally, the Kothamangalam and Muvattupuzha bypasses will be developed into two-lane roads with paved shoulders.
