KOZHIKODE: In a big ray of hope, a report emerged on Monday about the possibility of the death sentence for Malayali nurse Nimisha Priya getting cancelled. Religious scholar Kanthapuram A. P. Aboobacker Musliyar’s office received news regarding the same, while the ultimate decision on the matter is expected in a few hours.
Meanwhile, Abdul Fattah Mahdi, the brother of the deceased Talal, has come forward demanding a new date for Nimisha Priya's execution. He requested this by sending a letter to the Public Prosecutor. Abdul Fattah Mahdi has shared a picture of the letter on his Facebook post. Mahdi said he would not respond to the media on the matter and prefers silence instead.
In 2017, the court found Nimisha Priya guilty in the brutal murder case of Yemeni citizen Talal Abdo Mahdi. In 2020, the trial court sentenced her to death. The only way to escape the death penalty is to seek forgiveness from Talal’s family; however, it has not happened yet.
Nimisha Priya's mother, Premakumari, had earlier gone to Yemen to meet Talal's family in person and apologise. Negotiations were held with Talal's family and the heads of the tribe, but they didn’t yield any positive results.
Nimisha Priya is the wife of Thodupuzha native Tommy Thomas. Nimisha Priya claims that Talal Abdo Mahdi, who promised to help her start a clinic while she was working as a nurse, seized her passport and brutally tortured her, which resulted in retaliation from her side.
