THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Admission has been prohibited for those with pending criminal cases during spot admissions for undergraduate courses with vacant seats. The Kerala University has given instructions to college principals. The decision was taken by the Syndicate Sub-Committee chaired by VC Dr. Mohanan Kunnummal.
This is in a situation where those who have previously dropped out of their studies are getting re-admission in colleges with the aim of participating in student union activities. Many students are being booked in criminal cases for assaulting girls and destroying college property. With the removal of the age limit for college admission as per UGC regulations, anyone can join colleges at any time.
Those seeking admission are advised to provide an affidavit stating that they have not been debarred from examinations in the past and are not accused in criminal cases. If false information is provided, the college council can take the final decision on cancelling admission. Students can approach the university if they have a complaint. In many colleges, senior students who had previously dropped out of their studies are getting re-admission in view of the college union elections. A student leader who was banned from writing exams for three years in Karyavattom Government College for cheating through mobile phones had obtained re-admission by taking another subject as an option. This re-admission was cancelled by the university.
