VIZHINJAM: A royal sari from Balaramapuram handloom will soon reach President Droupadi Murmu, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi will get a Ponnada (a ceremonial shawl) as Kerala's gift during the Onam festival.
The order was given to Jaikish Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society, based in Kalliyur, Peringammala, as per the suggestions of the State Handloom Directorate. Society Secretary V. Santosh said this was the fourth year that the society has been tasked with providing handloom clothes to Union ministers, including the Prime Minister. The saree for President Draupadi Murmu is made of gold Kasavu tissue material.
15 royal sarees, 110 ponnadas and 15 royal ponnadas were woven by handloom artists. About 15 handloom weavers prepared these in 20 days. The woven clothes will be handed over to Handtex on Thursday. From here, the materials will be added along with artworks and spices and placed in the gift box to be sent to New Delhi.
A Ponnada woven with gold kasavu on tissue material is being prepared for the Prime Minister, while a Ponnada woven with gold and silver kasavu is reserved for Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
