THRISSUR: Malayalis are also switching to electric vehicles in droves. Electric vehicle registrations in Kerala have increased by 15 percent compared to last year.
As of November this year, 95,899 electric vehicles have been registered, 12,631 more than last year. When the December figures are added, it will cross one lakh. The total vehicle registration in Kerala in the 2024-25 financial year is 7.95 lakh. One in eight is an e-vehicle.
Most of them are two-wheelers. There is also an electric scooter that does not require registration. Initially, there were concerns about battery charge and duration. However, the story changed when leading vehicle manufacturers launched scooters that can get 150-200 km on a single charge. As for cars, those that can get 200-500 km on a single charge are readily available in the market. There is a warranty of up to eight years.
Maharashtra registered the highest number of electric passenger vehicles in the country in 2025. Karnataka came in second and Kerala came in third. Delhi and Tamil Nadu came in fourth and fifth in sales. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh leads in sales when e-cargo vehicles are included. Maharashtra is the state that provides the highest subsidy to e-vehicles.
