Organ transplant surgeries at government hospitals show steady growth

KOCHI: There has been a significant increase in the number of organ transplant surgeries in the state. Over the past ten years, government hospitals have made notable progress in this area, according to information provided under the Right to Information by the Health Department.

Between 2011 and 2016, government hospitals performed 507 kidney transplants and one each of heart and liver transplants. In the same period, private hospitals carried out 7,844 kidney transplants, 2,468 liver transplants, and 43 heart transplants. From 2016 to 2025, in the nine-year period, government hospitals performed 701 kidney transplants, 13 liver transplants, and 10 heart transplants. In private hospitals, kidney transplants increased to 8,545, liver transplants to 2,480, and heart transplants to 53.
