PALAKKAD: The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has disconnected power supply to the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) District Enforcement Office in Palakkad after electricity bill dues crossed Rs 50,000. The power connection was cut on the 2nd of this month. Since then, the office has been functioning in darkness, using mobile phone lights. The total pending amount is Rs 55,476.
The office monitors 47 AI cameras installed across six taluks in Palakkad district. Following the power disconnection, all these cameras have become non-functional. In addition, all five electric vehicles used by the enforcement wing are out of service, bringing enforcement squad operations to a standstill.
The office generates around Rs 2.5 crore in monthly revenue for the government through fines collected from traffic violations detected via AI cameras and direct inspections by enforcement squads. Earlier, the electricity bills were paid by Keltron, which was responsible for office maintenance. However, from January last year, the responsibility was transferred to the Motor Vehicles Department. Although bills were paid regularly at first, dues have been pending since November.
