THRISSUR: Residents of Lalur, who successfully fought against waste dumping, are now embarking on a new challenge: transforming their division within the Thrissur Corporation into the country's first fully digital ward within six months.
The employees of Ayyanthol Akshaya centre are visiting houses with laptops to collect and store all the documents including Aadhaar, PAN, ration card and driving license in the digilocker. There are 1,537 houses here. Each will be given a QR code. Digital payment training will be provided to all. Ayur jackfruit tree, which bears fruits throughout the year, will also be planted in the backyard of houses that become digital.
A year ago, under the leadership of Councillor P K Shajan, the effort to make it digital started. A people's committee was formed. State IT Welfare Board Director and Ayyanthol Akshaya centre owner A D Jayan is at the helm. There are twenty volunteers. In 2003, Jayan made Thaiyoor village in Thrissur the first computer literate village in India.
