Thiruvananthapuram becomes first Indian city to win Shanghai Award for sustainable development

PALAKKAD: The Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation has been awarded the Shanghai Award, a global recognition for sustainable development in cities. The award is given by UN Habitat and Shanghai Municipality. Thiruvananthapuram is the first city from India to win this award. Brisbane (Australia) and Salvador (Brazil) have won the award in previous years.

Mayor Arya Rajendran and Smart City CEO Rahul Sharma received the award along with a plaque and trophy at a ceremony held yesterday in Alexandria, Egypt. Minister MB Rajesh said that this is a Diwali gift for Kerala.

The award was given for the continued work done by Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation for sustainable development, urban safety standards and urban empowerment. The award was decided by a jury consisting of experts from different parts of the world.
