MALAPPURAM/KOZHIKODE: A five-and-a-half-year-old girl who was bitten by a stray dog ​​has contracted rabies even after receiving the vaccination. Siya Faris, daughter of Salman Faris, a native of Kakkathadam, Peruvallur, Malappuram, has been confirmed to have rabies.

The child, who is in critical condition, is being treated at the intensive care unit of the Maternal and Child Care Center of Kozhikode Medical College. Siya Faris was bitten by a stray dog ​​on March 29 when she went out to buy candies. The child, who had serious head and leg injuries, was first taken to the Tirurangadi Taluk Hospital. Then, she was taken to the Community Medicine Department of Kozhikode Medical College and given the IDRB vaccine. However, after she developed a fever and symptoms of rabies, she was admitted to the Maternal and Child Care Center of Kozhikode Medical College on the 23rd. Siya Faris was confirmed to have rabies on the 26th, said Dr Vijayakumar, Pediatric HOD of the Maternal and Child Protection Center. The child is being cared for by a team led by the Chief of the Pediatric Second Unit, Dr Mohandas. Superintendent of the Maternal and Child Protection Center, Dr Arun Preet, said that the child is being given the necessary medicines. Five other people were bitten on the day the child was bitten by a stray dog. Their health condition is satisfactory. Malappuram Deputy DMO Dr C Shubin said that rabies can occur even if the vaccine is taken if the child is bitten on the head.
