THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Indian Meteorological Department warned of rains intensifying in the state in the coming days. An orange alert was issued for the next three hours in the Thiruvananthapuram district. The Indian Meteorological Department informed of the possibility of heavy rain with thunderstorms and strong winds with a speed of up to 40 kmph in isolated places in the district.

A yellow alert was earlier issued for four districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, today. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, and Alappuzha districts were on yellow alert. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha districts are put on yellow alert for tomorrow. The possibility of isolated heavy rains is predicted. Heavy rain means a situation where 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rain is received in 24 hours.

Precautions

  • Move to a safe building as soon as you see the first sign of lightning. Remaining in open areas increases the risk of being struck by lightning.
  • Keep windows and doors closed during periods of strong winds and lightning. Stay away from doors and windows. Stay inside the building and try to avoid touching walls or floors as much as possible.
  • Disconnect electrical appliances. Avoid being near electrical appliances during a thunderstorm.
  • Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
  • If the weather is cloudy, avoid playing outdoors and on terraces, including with children.
