Rain predicted in state today, hilly areas on alert; Kallakadal Phenomenon likely

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Heavy rains have been predicted in the state today. More rains are expected in south and central Kerala. Hilly areas have been alerted. However, there is no warning in any district. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said there is a possibility of rain with thunder and lightning and strong winds with a speed of 30-40 km per hour (maximum 50 kmph).


There is a chance of light rain at isolated places in Kannur and Kasaragod of Kerala in the next three hours. Rains will intensify in the coming days. Three districts are on yellow alert tomorrow. Yellow alert has been issued in Idukki, Palakkad and Malappuram. Yellow alert has been declared in Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram and Wayanad on Sunday and Pathanamthitta, Idukki and Palakkad on Monday.


Kallakadal Phenomenon
According to the National Centre for Oceanography and Research (INCOIS), high waves of 1.4 to 1.6 meters and Kallakadal phenomenon are likely to occur along Kannur and Kasaragod coasts till 11.30 tonight. Fishermen and coastal residents in these areas should exercise special caution. The IMD has informed that there is no disruption to fishing in the Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coasts.
