Rains to continue in Kerala; two districts on red alert, nine districts asked to be vigilant

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has informed that rains will continue in the state. Kozhikode and Wayanad are on red alert. Orange alert has been sounded in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kannur and Kasargod.

A holiday has been declared to educational institutions in Wayanad, Kozhikode and Idukki following heavy rains. The holiday is applicable to tuition centers, madrassas, professional colleges and anganawadis. The holiday is not applicable to university exams and PSC exams.

Red alert
29/05/2025: Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Kannur and Kasargod
30/05/2025: Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Kannur and Kasargod


The IMD has issued a red alert in the districts. The possibility of extremely heavy rainfall has been predicted. More than 204.4 mm of rainfall will be received in 24 hours.

Orange alert

29/05/2025: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad

30/05/2025: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Palakkad, Malappuram Kozhikode, Wayanad

31/05/2025: Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod

The IMD has issued an orange alert in the following districts. The possibility of extremely heavy rainfall has been predicted in isolated places. The IMD defines very heavy rainfall as rainfall of 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours.

Yellow Alert

28/05/2025: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha

31/05/2025: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Wayanad


The IMD has declared a yellow alert in the following districts. The possibility of isolated heavy rain is predicted. Heavy rain is defined as a situation where rain of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm is expected in 24 hours.

Extremely heavy rain can cause accidents. Heavy rain is expected to occur in a short period of time. It may cause mountain flash floods and lightning floods. There is also a possibility of waterlogging in urban areas and generally low-lying areas. Continued rainfall may cause landslides and mudslides. The public and government agencies should be extremely vigilant.
