THIRUVALLA: Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil, who was arrested in a rape case, was pelted with rotten eggs. The incident occurred when Rahul was being taken out of Mavelikkara Special Sub Jail to be produced before the Thiruvalla JFCM Court. The eggs were thrown by DYFI workers who had come to protest.
Rotten eggs were hurled at the vehicle carrying Rahul. The police protected Rahul from the protesters with a lot of struggle. The MLA was remanded in SIT custody for three days. The court directed Rahul Mamkootathil to be produced on the evening of January 15. The SIT had submitted a seven-day custody application to the court.
The defense argued that the bail application should be considered before considering the custody application and that the arrest was illegal. The statement of the complainant was taken through video conference. The defense argued that the statement should be signed within three days after being taken and that the procedure was not followed even in registering the case.
The complaint was accepted in violation of the rules. The reasons for the arrest could not be convinced to the accused. Rahul's lawyer had pointed out in his argument that there was a violation of constitutional rights. Even the minimum requirements for witnesses were not met.
The court also asked why the MLA did not sign the arrest notice. The defense repeatedly argued that it was a politically motivated case. Rahul's other argument was that the case was politically motivated and an attempt was made to drag him into the limelight. Meanwhile, it is reported that Rahul's phone and laptop seized by the police will be examined.
