Reports of quashing Nimisha Priya’s death sentence, no confirmation from Centre

KOZHIKODE: The Center has not responded to reports of quashing the death sentence of Malayali nurse Nimisha Priya, jailed in Yemen. Government sources have said that they will respond after receiving more information. The Central government had earlier informed the Supreme Court that third-party intervention in the case would not be beneficial.

It is reported that a high-level meeting held in Sana'a decided to quash the temporarily postponed death sentence. The office of Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musliyar also informed that a crucial decision was made in the mediation talks. Kanthapuram informed that her death sentence is likely to be cancelled. Reports also emerged that an agreement has been reached to pardon Nimisha Priya. Yemen scholar informed that an agreement has been reached on the relaxations. The scholar also attended the talks held. Meantime, no decision has been taken on the blood money.

In addition to the Yemeni scholar group appointed by Sheikh Umar Hafeel Thangal at the request of the Indian Grand Mufti, the rulers of Northern Yemen and international diplomats participated in the discussion. Other matters after the cancellation of the death penalty will be decided on further discussions. This will be after further discussions with the family of the dead Talal. Meantime, the brother of the dead Talal has also reportedly requested that a new date be decided for the execution.

Nimisha Priya’s execution, which was scheduled for July 16, was postponed following the intervention of Kanthapuram. Kanthapuram had also requested that diplomatic representatives appointed by the central government also participate in the second phase of discussions.
