Sabarigiri dams run dry; Power generation less than half

PATHANAMTHITTA: With the monsoon deceiving, production at Sabarigiri, the state's second-largest hydropower project has fallen to less than half of the previous year. The water flow is reduced and the dams are drying up. The electricity board is concerned that if there is insufficient rain, the production will have to be halted.

The Pampa and Kakki Anathode dams, which are part of the Sabarigiri project had only 34 percent of their water yesterday. During the same days last year, there was 70 to 80 percent water due to the rains in July, August and September which kept the dams full. This year, even after the middle of August, there hasn't been much rain.

The inner forests, which serve as the catchment areas for the dams have been experiencing hot weather for many days.

Although all six generators at the Moozhiyar powerhouse are functional production has been reduced.
