THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A high-level meeting chaired by General Education Minister V. Sivankutty has decided to enforce stricter safety measures in schools and take stern action against those found negligent. The minister warned that the indifferent attitude of teachers and officials—believing they will be paid regardless of performance—would not be tolerated.
Following the electrocution death of a Class 8 student, Mithun, at Thevalakkara Boys High School, the headmistress F. Suja has been suspended by the school management. The action by the CPM-controlled governing body came after strict instructions from the minister. Based on the report from the Director of General Education, the management was issued a show-cause notice and must respond within three days. As per the Kerala Education Rules, action can be taken against the Thevalakkara school management. The minister clarified that the General Education Department has the authority to take over schools or revoke their recognition if safety failures are found.
3 lakh for Mithun’s family
Minister Sivankutty also announced that Rs 3 lakh would be given to Mithun’s family from the Public Education Department’s PD account. He directed the school management to also provide financial support. The Chief Minister is expected to announce additional compensation. Mithun’s younger brother will be allowed to continue his education free of cost—including exam fees—up to Class 12.
Buildings continue to collapse due to neglect
1. A school building collapsed in Kadammanitta. Since it happened at night, a major disaster was averted. Complaints had been raised about the dangerous condition of the building, including during the Nava Kerala Sadas, but no action was taken.
2. In Payyannur, the roof of the BRC building in the sub-district office compound collapsed. The facility houses a centre for children with disabilities, the AEO office, and the school’s cycle parking area. Fortunately, it was a holiday due to a red alert issued for heavy rains.
