KANNUR: Serious allegations have surfaced against the release of Sherin, a convict in the Karanavar murder case, with fellow inmate Sunitha from Thalakkulam claiming that the Jail Advisory Committee submitted a misleading report to the Governor to facilitate Sherin’s early release.

Speaking to the media, Sunitha alleged that Sherin received special treatment during her time in prison, enjoying privileges such as special clothing, regular outside food, access to a mobile phone, and personal makeup items — amenities not typically available to inmates. According to her, the intervention of the state cabinet played a key role in speeding up Sherin’s release despite her not meeting the standard criteria. Sunitha added that she will approach the High Court to challenge Sherin’s release.

“It was due to the intervention of the cabinet that Sherin's release was expedited. There were absolutely no valid grounds for her to be released. In fact, there are at least five female inmates in the open prison who are more eligible than Sherin. Only those with good conduct are transferred to open prisons, and Sherin did not meet that criterion. Still, the cabinet stepped in to release her,” Sunitha said.

Sunitha alleged that the jail superintendent’s report was deliberately favourable to Sherin, which is likely why the Governor approved it.

“It is mandatory for life-term prisoners to work inside the jail, but Sherin never worked. Other inmates used to wash her clothes. She used to get food from outside three times a day and even had access to a mobile phone. Just six months ago, there was a case filed against her for assaulting a foreign woman. Ironically, someone like her is getting released in the name of good conduct,” she said.

“Sherin didn’t wear the standard prison uniform — instead, she wore white linen clothes. It was as if a beauty parlour was set up for her inside the prison. All conveniences were granted to her by the superintendent. In reality, she had no need to come out — she already enjoyed all the luxuries inside. Some people have close physical and emotional ties with Sherin, which is the real reason behind all of this. I don’t personally mind her release, but a list of more eligible inmates was submitted and ignored. That’s not right. I will pursue legal action,” Sunitha added.
