THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Various districts in the state are likely to receive rainfall in the coming three hours. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), isolated places in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Pathanamthitta districts may experience light/ moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning, along with strong winds up to 40 kmph. Isolated areas in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam are also likely to receive light rainfall, the IMD said.

Due to the “Kallakkadal” (rough sea) phenomenon, the National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR) has warned of possible coastal flooding and sea attack along several parts of the Kerala coast until 11:30 p.m. tonight. Waves of 0.7 to 1.0 meters are likely along the coast of Thiruvananthapuram (from Kappil to Pozhiyoor), Kollam (from Aalappad to Edava), and Kozhikode (from Chombala to Ramanattukara) districts. On the Kanyakumari coast (from Neerodi to Arockiapuram), waves between 1.0 and 1.1 meters are expected.

Warnings and safety guidelines:

  1. As rough sea conditions may worsen, people in vulnerable coastal areas should move to safer places as instructed by authorities.
  2. Small boats and fishing vessels should not venture into the sea during this period.
  3. During the rough sea phase, it is dangerous both to launch and to anchor fishing boats, so both activities should be avoided.
  4. All beach-related tourism and recreational activities should be completely stopped until the warning is withdrawn.
  5. Fishing boats and vessels should be securely anchored in harbours, maintaining safe distances between them to prevent collisions. Ensure the safety of fishing equipment.
  6. Avoid trips to beaches and sea-based recreation completely.
  7. Be extra cautious as there is also a possibility of coastal erosion.
