Two arrested over death of tourist at resort in Wayanad

KALPETTA: Two have been arrested in connection with the death of a tourist at a resort in Wayanad. The two arrested are K P Swachand, the manager of Emarald Tentgram Resort and Anurag, the supervisor. They have been charged with culpable homicide.

Nishma (25) of Akampadam in Nilambur died yesterday after the tent of the resort in 900 Kandi collapsed. Two sustained injuries in the accident. The tent had no security. The tent was made of rotten logs.


A group of 16 including Nishma were in the resort. It is suspected that the accident was caused by heavy rains in the area. The resort manager said yesterday that the tent collapsed due to the rain and that the tent had enough security.


Four deaths in three years
Four have died in Meppadi in three years due to unauthorized tourism activities. Shahana (26) of Vadakara was killed in an attack by a wild elephant in Elambaleri. The incident happened on the night of January 22, 2022. Shahana, who was staying in a tent at the Rain Forest Tent Village in Elambaleri, was attacked by a wild elephant when she came out at night. The resort operated without any security arrangements.

On December 30 in 2023, a doctor from Tamil Nadu, who had come to the same resort where the accident happened yesterday, fell from a cliff and died. The accident occurred while he was trekking.

A student of Kollam drowned in a river near Chooralmala. The student involved in the accident was from a group who had come for a tour to Thollairam Kandi in Kallady. The woman died when a shed collapsed at the end.
