THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The LDF witnessed an unexpected setback in the local body polls, said CPM state secretary M V Govindan. Necessary corrections will be made after a detailed examination. M V Govindan while talking to the media said the Left Democratic Front in Kerala has the experience of overcoming setbacks.
'The LDF has won power in seven district panchayats. In the 2010 local body elections, the LDF got power only in six places. If examined the block panchayat level, won in 59 places then and today won in only 27.
Some are campaigning that the foundation of the LDF has been destroyed. It is important that we were able to win in half the district panchayats. There has been no change in the foundation of the LDF. The UDF contested in alliance with communal forces. UDF transferred votes to BJP and vice versa to defeat the LDF. The UDF contested in good harmony with forces promoting religious nationalism.
Except for winning the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, the BJP could not make any major gains in the local body elections. The LDF won in Pandalam Municipality, which includes the most important area related to Sabarimala. BJP lost its majority in Palakkad Municipality.
LDF got the biggest victory in the last local body elections. The state government has given Kerala unparalleled achievements. However, we also need to examine why these achievements were not reflected in the elections. We will examine organizational matters and whether there were any shortcomings in detail. We will go out to the people more and understand their views and thoughts,' clarified M V Govindan.
