THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With temperatures continuing to climb across the state, authorities have issued Orange and Yellow alerts in several districts following a rise in the Ultraviolet (UV) Index. An Orange alert has been sounded for Munnar in Idukki district, where the UV index has reached 8, indicating a high level of radiation. The Meteorological Department has urged residents to exercise extreme caution and follow strict safety measures.
Yellow alerts have been issued for Kottarakkara, Konni, Chengannur, Changanassery, Kalamassery, Ollur, Thrithala, Ponnani, Beypore and Mananthavady. Officials have advised people in these areas to take preventive steps to reduce exposure. According to the Meteorological Department, prolonged exposure to high UV radiation can cause sunburn, skin disorders, eye problems and other health complications.
The UV index typically peaks between 10 am and 3 pm. The public is advised to avoid direct sunlight during these hours as much as possible.
People who work outdoors, including fishermen engaged in sea and inland fishing, water transport workers, bike riders and tourists, should be especially cautious. Extra care is also recommended for individuals with skin conditions, eye diseases, cancer and those with weakened immune systems.
Authorities recommend using protective measures such as hats, umbrellas and sunglasses when stepping out during the daytime. Wearing full-sleeved cotton clothing that covers the body can also help reduce exposure. During travel or outdoor work, taking breaks in shaded areas is advised.
Experts note that UV levels are generally higher in hilly and tropical regions. Even on clear days without clouds, UV radiation can remain intense. In addition, surfaces such as water bodies and sand can reflect ultraviolet rays, increasing the risk of exposure in such areas.
