KOCHI: A dynamic wireless system that charges electric vehicles while on the road is coming to Kerala. The first trail run is planned in Thiruvananthapuram, as the city is now bustling with electric cars, scooters and buses. A trial run will be conducted within a year. For this, ANERT has completed discussions with the Electreon company, which has implemented a similar project in Norway.
Charging occurs when the transmitter unit placed on the highway surface and the receiver pad under the vehicle come face to face. Charging is done through magnetic resonance. For this, transmitter panels will be installed at locations along state highways. A 100-meter-long transmitter line requires 500 kilowatts of power. Multiple transmitter lines of up to one kilometer in length will be installed on the road.
The capacity of the receiver pad is 11 kilowatts. One receiver pad should be in cars and three or four in buses. There will be special software and an app for payment. Like FASTags in vehicles, money is deducted based on electricity usage. When the money runs out, the wallet must be charged. A static wireless charging station will also be launched in Kerala on a trial basis for the first time in the country. The project is for electric buses. Through this, vehicles can be charged wirelessly while parked.
For this, special centers similar to dynamic wireless charging will be set up. Charging centers will also be set up on the Vizhinjam-Balaramapuram, Nilakkal-Pamba, Kalady-Nedumbassery Airport, and Angamaly-Nedumbassery Airport routes.
