PATHANAMTHITTA: A youth’s leg has to be amputated following the medical negligence of Konni and Kottayam Medical Colleges. A complaint has been filed against the medical negligence. Abhimanyu (30) of Kalanjoor came to the fore against the negligence of the authorities. The family has been pushed into extreme hardship after the youth, who was the sole breadwinner of the family, is bedridden, leaving them struggling even for food.
Abhimanyu, an AC mechanic, fractured his leg in last December. He first sought treatment at Konni Medical College and after the doctors advised him to undergo an emergency surgery, he was shifted to Kottayam Medical College. However, what he faced there was severe negligence, said Abhimanyu.
'He was on stretcher for two days. Despite severe pain, he was not given any medicine. He was later shifted to the ward, but did not receive proper care. He was subjected to a surgery on his pus-filled leg and a rod was inserted on December 31,' Abhimanyu said painfully.
A scan conducted after the surgery revealed a nerve damage. A nerve was then taken from the other leg and implanted, but to no avail. After completely losing sensation in his leg, the doctors decided that it had to be amputated. Abhimanyu’s right leg was amputated on January 1.
With the death of his father a year ago, all hope was on Abhimanyu. The family, consisting of his wife and son, is now in a state of uncertainty. Unable to earn a living by working, Abhimanyu is planning to approach authorities seeking justice.
