Congress seeks new president; KPCC President Sunny Joseph to resign

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: KPCC President Sunny Joseph will resign if he contests from Peravoor in the assembly elections. In this situation, the Congress is looking for a new president to lead the party in the assembly elections.

Congress Working Committee member Kodikunnil Suresh MP, senior leaders KC Joseph, MM Hassan, Anto Antony and Shafi Parambil are on the high command's list of possible candidates. Ramesh Chennithala is being considered for the post of election campaign committee chairman.

The transfer of charge will take place after the election notification is issued. Kodikunnil Suresh was considered for the post of KPCC president before also. It did not happen following the party's suggestion that he contest to retain the Mavelikkara Lok Sabha seat. Kodikunnil has expressed interest in contesting the assembly elections this time. The party has not taken a decision on MPs contesting for the assembly.

M.M. Hassan was the KPCC president in 2017-18. Peravoor MLA Sunny Joseph became the KPCC president last year when K. Sudhakaran stepped down. The election committee will meet on Tuesday. Most of the sitting MLAs have expressed interest in contesting. The leadership will seek the opinion of the district leaders in this regard. The KPCC leadership will meet the core committee members, political affairs committee members and MLAs of each district from Tuesday to Thursday. Out of the 93 seats contested in 2021, the Congress won 21 seats. The Muslim League, which contested 25 seats, won 15 seats.
