THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council (KCBC) has called for MPs from Kerala to support the Waqf Amendment Bill. KCBC urged public representatives to stand for the people and support the law amendment bill introduced by the central government. It stated that passing the Waqf Amendment Bill is essential to ensure justice for the people of Munambam.
With the budget session nearing its end, the central government has intensified efforts to pass the Waqf Bill in Parliament, prompting KCBC to express its stance. MPs from both left and right parties in Kerala have opposed the Waqf Bill. Kottayam MP Francis George had initially visited the protest site in Munambam and announced his support for the bill but later changed his stance.
The BJP had accused the Congress of opposing the bill in Parliament despite claiming to support the Munambam protesters. Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated in the Lok Sabha on Friday that the central government would introduce the Waqf Amendment Bill during the current session itself. He asserted that the bill was drafted in accordance with the spirit of the Constitution and clarified that, under the new bill, only courts would have the authority to resolve disputed matters.
