THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: From now on, smart driving licenses will be issued from all RT offices in the state. This follows the success of the system implemented on an experimental basis in the Thiruvananthapuram, Kudappanakunnu, Kozhikode and Wayanad offices. Unlike the old plastic laminated license, the new license fits in the wallet like an ATM card.
The Centre has proposed two types of cards, chipped and chipless. In chip cards, the information on the card can be collected using a chip reader. However, most states have omitted chip cards due to technical issues. The state transport department will also omit the microchip.
The license is prepared as per the criteria prescribed by the Union Ministry of Road Transport. The government is also planning to issue vehicle registration certificates on the same model.
Printing of the existing laminated card in the respective offices leads to increased workload and irregularity. A centralized printing system will eliminate the need for middlemen to obtain licenses from offices.
