Nigerian man arrested for defrauding housewife of 81 lakhs

PATHANAMTHITTA: A Nigerian man was arrested in the case of defrauding a housewife of 81 lakhs. Isichiku, a native of Nigeria, was arrested. The 26-year-old man was arrested by the Kottayam Cyber ​​Police from Delhi.

The incident related to the case happened in 2021. 81 lakh rupees was extorted by Isichiku who met the housewife from Changanassery Chethipuzha through Facebook. He made the housewife believe that he had sent a gift of Rs 30 crore to celebrate India's independence on August 15. He then made a phone call to the housewife pretending to be a diplomatic agent from the Mumbai Customs office.

He asked the housewife to pay Rs 22,000 as customs duty as she was receiving valuables and dollars from the UK. Photos and videos of the gifts were sent to convince the housewife. The housewife who fell into the trap handed over the money he demanded. After this, calls were received from several airports pretending to be customs officials and the housewife transferred money to the accounts mentioned by him. The fraudster created a fake account in the name of Anna Morgan, a resident of the UK, for the scam.
Later, when the housewife did not send the money, he threatened her by pointing out that her gifts had come from abroad and if she did not receive them, legal action would be taken against her. With this, she took loans from relatives and friends and sold the gold she owned and sent money again.

Finally, in July 2022, the housewife lodged a complaint with the Kottayam district police chief following which the cyber police registered a case. On investigation, it was found that the accused had committed the fraud from Delhi. The police are investigating if he got any accomplices.
