Hometown bids teary-eyed farewell for Vandana, mother collapses, heartbroken father gives last kiss to daughter

KOTTAYAM: The body of Dr Vandana Das (23) killed in an attack at Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital, was consigned to flames. The funeral rites were held at her house in Muttuchira, Kottayam. Thousands including people from various walks of life paid homage to her.

Vandana is the only daughter of K G Mohandas of Kottayam and Vasantha Kumari. Seeing the body of Vandana, her mother said ‘ask her to open her eyes’ and then she collapsed. This was a heart wrenching sight and the people there were not able to bear the sight. Her heartbroken father gave her the last kiss.

Vandana was killed yesterday. Vandana took her MBBS from Azeeziya Medical College and was doing her house surgency in Kottarakkara taluk hospital.

She was stabbed by a patient who came to dress his wounds, with the surgical scissors. The accused is Sandeep (42) of Kudavattoor. The police have arrested him.

He was a teacher of Nedumbana UP School. He himself called the Kollam rural police control room at 3 am and asked them to rescue him after involved in a fight. When the Pooyapally police reached the spot, Sandeep was in the vicinity of the neighbor's house with a stick. He asked the police to take him to the hospital to dress his wounds. The police took Sandeep along with his relative Rajendran Pillai and social activist Binu to the Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital. He turned violent and stabbed the doctor with the hospital scissors. The accused has been suspended from service.
