THRISSUR: Instead of mother cow's milk, milk powder of equal nutritional value to feed the calf is all ready to hit the market. The milk powder is manufactured by Amul. Milma Malabar Union will start supplying subsidized milk powder to farmers within a week.
The calf drinks up to three liters of mother cow's milk per day for three months. A calf drinks an average of 225-270 liters. At Rs 45 per liter, it will cost the farmer Rs 10,125-12,150. The price of 100 grams of milk replacer to make a solution equal to one liter of milk is Rs.14.80. After deducting a 50 percent subsidy, the farmer has to pay only Rs 7.40. Initially, three packs of five kg each will be given. Feeding green grass along with the milk replacer improves calf growth and digestion.
