Govt should think seriously about introducing sex education: HC

hc

KOCHI: The High Court has asked the government to think seriously about introducing sex education in schools and colleges. It was also ordered that a committee be formed if necessary to study its inclusion in the curriculum. The High Court had earlier allowed a 15-year-old girl, who was impregnated by her brother, to abort the eight-month-old pregnancy on a plea filed by the girl's father. Justice PV Kunjikrishnan passed the order by disposing of the petition after the report of the abortion proceedings were produced. A copy of the order has also been directed to be given to the Chief Secretary.

The single bench stated that sex education is imperative considering the fact that there is no mechanism to guide minors in front of the internet.

According to the order dated May 22, the authorities have stated that the procedures have been completed and the baby has been taken out as it has reached full growth and has been handed over to the Child Welfare Committee.

The High Court opined that a father can sign such a petition only with tears in his eyes. "The plight of the girl is also unimaginable. The entire society is responsible for this tragedy. Lack of sexual knowledge is the cause of such problems.", the court said.
