KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that 19 people were killed in the violence that took place in the state during the panchayat elections. Mamata Banerjee said that the families of the victims will be given emergency financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each and one of the family members will be given a job. Mamata also stated that the government will not look at party politics in this regard. She was talking to the media after the Trinamool Congress made a huge advance in the panchayat elections.

An earlier report claimed that 37 people were killed in the attacks. However, Mamata denied this. She said that most of the people killed in the violent incidents were Trinamool members. Mamata also criticized the BJP for appointing a fact-finding committee to investigate the incidents of violence. She asked where they were when riots took place in Manipur and Assam.
