SURAT: India now owns the title of the country with the largest office complex in the world. This rare record is now held by the diamond city of Surat in Gujarat. The Surat Diamond Bourse has overtaken the US defense headquarters, the Pentagon, to create new history.
The area of the Pentagon is 65 lakh square feet. The building complex built at Khajor in Surat has an area of 67.28 lakh sq.ft. It consists of nine towers of fifteen floors each spread over 35.54 acres.
With the inauguration of Surat Diamond Bourse by Prime Minister Narendra Modi this coming November, Surat will become the hub of India's diamond trade. Mumbai has had this title for centuries. 92% of the diamonds traded in the country are polished in Surat.
The Diamond Traders Association and the Khajor Development Authority built the corporate headquarters considering the financial liability and security threat of transporting diamonds worth crores to Mumbai which is 250 km away. It has also received a Platinum Green Certificate, the highest recognition for green building. Diamond producers and traders have acquired the entire space in the complex, which started construction in 2019.
Chairman Vallabhbhai Patel responded that a trade of Rs 2 lakh crore is expected when the Surat Diamond Exchange is fully operational.
