MALAPPURAM: The state government has taken action against eight policemen in the Tanur custodial death case. Thrissur Range DIG issued an order suspending eight policemen pending investigation. The preliminary autopsy report had indicated that Thamir Jifri, who died while in police custody, had suffered blows.
Two plastic wrappers containing a crystal-like substance were found in Thamir Jifri's stomach. The substance is doubted to be MDMA.
Five accused, including Thamir, were caught with MDMA from Tanur at 1.45 am. According to the police, Thamir was taken to the hospital at around 4:30 am after those who were with him informed them that Thamir was suffering from physical problems in the lock-up. However, his life could not be saved.
Malappuram SP announced that the police would investigate whether there was any lapse in police procedures. Crime Branch DySP will investigate the unnatural death. A Magistrate-level inquiry has also been initiated into the incident.
